Experience Porvoo year-round

Less than an hour from Helsinki, Porvoo offers a slower pace and a refreshing change of scenery. This riverside town – one of Finland’s oldest – is instantly recognisable for its cobbled streets, red shorehouses, and colourful wooden houses. But beyond its postcard looks, Porvoo has a rhythm that rewards taking your time. It’s a place to wander without hurry, enjoy small details, and find new reasons to visit all year round.

Most visitors come in summer when the Old Town is alive with day-trippers. But in spring, autumn, and winter, the town takes on a different character. It's quieter, softer, and in many ways, more inviting. A cosy café after a riverside walk in the snow, the scent of fresh cinnamon buns drifting from a bakery, or the golden light of an October afternoon can make a visit outside peak season even more memorable.

Here's a guide to the perfect day-trip from Helsinki to Porvoo – year-round.

The road (or sea) to Porvoo

Porvoo is easy to reach without a car. Regular buses from Helsinki’s Kamppi terminal take just over an hour, a simple and low-impact way to travel. In summer, you can swap speed for scenery and take the vintage steamship M/S J.L. Runeberg from Helsinki’s Market Square, passing through the islands of the archipelago. The journey takes longer, but with seabirds overhead and the shoreline sliding past, it becomes part of the day’s experience.

If you drive – or combine cycling with public transport – you can explore a few hidden gems along the way. In the coastal village of Gumbostrand, Gumbostrand Konst & Form combines a contemporary art gallery, a Nordic design shop, and restaurant in a peaceful country setting worth a visit.

A little further along, Leipomo-Kahvila N'avetta on the old Uusi Porvoontie welcomes you into a restored barn filled with the aroma of freshly baked cinnamon buns. And just before Porvoo, the 19th-century Haikko Manor & Spa offers an elegant pause, with manicured gardens and a restaurant that makes an ideal stop for lunch, coffee or an overnight stay.

Experiences in every season

Porvoo wears each season differently. In spring, riverside paths brighten with blossoms, and cafés open their terraces to catch the first warm days. Summer is long evenings by the water, live music drifting from outdoor venues, and a buzz in the Old Town’s narrow streets. By autumn, the pace slows, the air turns crisp, and the town glows with warm gold and amber leaves. Winter is hushed and atmospheric. Think snow on rooftops, Christmas lights strung between shopfronts, and the inviting warmth of a café window glowing against the dark.

The Old Town is the undisputed heart of Porvoo, with its softly coloured wooden houses, cobblestones, and mix of family-run cafés, artisan boutiques, and small galleries. The famous red granaries along the river, Porvoo Cathedral, and the Brunberg chocolate shop are worth a visit, but there’s more to see if you wander a little further. Visit the Moomin-themed kid's park on Linnankoskenkatu or Castle Hill (Iso Linnamäki) for unique views over Porvoo.

Culture plays a big part in Porvoo’s identity – and it makes for the perfect indoor getaway when the weather isn’t in your favour. The Walter Runeberg Sculpture Collection showcases the work of one of Finland’s leading 19th-century sculptors and the son of Finnish national epic poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg. The Porvoo Doll and Toy Museum houses more than a thousand toys from across the decades. For a contemporary counterpoint, Porvoo Art Hall at Taidetehdas hosts exhibitions, concerts, and performances year-round in a converted industrial space.

Dine in style

Porvoo’s food scene reflects the seasons and the surrounding landscape. Zum Beispiel serves bright, modern dishes made with care, while Gabriel 1763 offers refined Finnish classics in an elegant historic building. Sicapelle is known for creative, seasonal menus, and Bistro Sinne brings a Nordic bistro twist with local ingredients and bold flavours. Restaurant Salt focuses on fresh fish and seafood from nearby waters, and Restaurant VÅR is Porvoo's Michelin-starred little gem. Beer lovers can head to Vanhan Porvoon Panimo, a small brewery serving craft beers in a relaxed, repurposed industrial space.

Menus change through the year: fresh berries in summer, wild mushrooms in autumn, hearty stews in winter. No matter when you visit, you’ll find flavours rooted in the season.

Don't miss the sweets

Sweet treats are a Porvoo tradition. PetriS Chocolate presents handcrafted chocolates with unique toppings, while the Brunberg Factory Shop sells the full range of Finland’s oldest confectionery at factory prices. Bring home a box of their iconic Kisses – a chocolate covered treat with a waffle base and a soft, foamy inside.

For coffee, Porvoon Paahtimo roasts its own beans in a former warehouse by the river and is a local favourite. Tee- ja kahvihuone Helmi, set in a charming wooden house, is known for its own patisserie and nostalgic atmosphere. Café Cabriole is beloved for its cakes and homemade pastries, while Café Fanny pairs cosy charm with views over the central square Raatihuoneentori. For something a little different, try Vanhan Porvoon Glassikko for delicious ice cream. And if you happen to come across a true Finnish dessert classic, the Runeberg tart, anywhere in Porvoo, it's a must-try!

Stay the night

Porvoo may be an easy day trip from Helsinki, but spending the night gives you a chance to see the town at its most atmospheric. When the evening crowds leave, the Old Town slows into a quieter rhythm: lanterns glow in the windows, cobblestones shine after a summer rain, and the river reflects the lights of cafés and houses.

In the Old Town, hotel Pariisin Ville combines rustic wooden interiors with a touch of French-inspired romance, while Runo Hotel brings Nordic design flair to a former bank building with one of the most popular breakfasts in the region. Hotel Onni, tucked beside Porvoo Cathedral, is a small boutique stay with individually decorated rooms and a charming courtyard restaurant. Hotel Sparre, located in the town centre, is a reliable choice with comfortable rooms and easy access to shops and sights.

A few final tips for your visit

Porvoo is compact, so walking is the best way to get around. Wear comfortable shoes for cobblestones, and if you want a quieter visit, arrive early or in the late afternoon or outside the peak summer season that ranges from June to August. A reusable bag is handy for carrying local treats. If you’re visiting in winter, dress warmly – the river air can be surprisingly sharp.

Whether it’s spring’s fresh blossoms, summer’s long evenings, autumn’s golden calm, or winter’s snowy charm, Porvoo is more than a day trip from Helsinki. It’s a chance to slow down, savour local life, and see how each season brings something new to this timeless Finnish riverside town.
