Finland is one of 2026's Top Destinations by Lonely Planet

Finland has been recognised by Lonely Planet as one of the world’s 25 must-visit destinations for 2026. The annual Best in Travel list highlights the most inspiring journeys and experiences for the year ahead.

Why Finland made the list

According to Lonely Planet, Finland stands out for helping travellers “find happiness in wild places.” The recognition reflects the country’s deep connection with nature from its vast forests and thousands of lakes to open skies and clean air.

Finland offers a range of experiences year-round, from Arctic adventures under the Northern Lights to the calm of the Lakeland region and the design-driven urban atmosphere of Helsinki. The Finnish sauna culture, recognised by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, remains an essential part of the experience. In Lapland, visitors can also learn about the indigenous Sámi culture.

What makes Finland unique among the 25 destinations

The Best in Travel 2026 list features a wide range of places from tropical islands to historic cities and cultural capitals. Finland’s distinction within the list comes from its northern location, strong connection to nature, and calm rhythm of life.

A northern landscape shaped by seasons
Finland’s appeal changes dramatically throughout the year. Long, light-filled summer days, colourful autumns, snow-covered winters, and the soft brightness of spring each create their own atmosphere.

Nature at the centre of everyday life
Where some destinations focus on historic landmarks or dense urban culture, Finland’s travel experiences often take place outdoors. Forests, lakes, and the archipelago are integral parts of daily life, easily reached from towns and cities.

Urban culture with a sustainable mindset
Helsinki stands out for combining design, architecture, and sustainability within a compact, walkable city. It offers a contemporary Nordic contrast to the ancient or tropical settings featured elsewhere on the list.

Wellbeing as a way of life
The Finnish sauna tradition and the idea of finding balance in nature are central to the country’s identity. This focus on everyday wellbeing gives travel in Finland a slower, more reflective pace.
