Why go fishing in Finland?
Finland has more lakes than most countries have towns, around 188,000 of them, plus rivers, rapids and a Baltic coastline that stretches for thousands of kilometres. Whether you're after a quiet morning on a still lake, a salmon river in Lapland or a sea pike off the Åland Islands, the variety here is genuinely hard to match.
Under Finland's Everyman's Rights, fishing with a rod and line in most still waters is free for everyone. Rivers and rapids with migratory fish – the salmon and grayling waters you'll find later in this article – require a local permit alongside the national fisheries management fee. It's a simple system, and well worth the small extra step.
Here are eight of the best places to cast a line around the country.
